REV. JOON CHOI

Founder, Sr. Pastor, & Chief Spiritual Architect

San Francisco Bay Christian Fellowship

Email: joon.choi@sfbaycf.org | Twitter @ChoiJoon

Having grown up in a “non-religious” or unchurched home, Joon had very little knowledge of God, the Bible, or about the church up until he was in the mid-teens. By God’s grace, one day, he was invited and introduced to the gospel, Christian faith, and the local church through two of his closest friends in high school. After attending a local Christian church for about a year, he had gone through an authentic conversion experience at a retreat at age 17, and been baptized shortly after. While in college, he unexpectedly received a call into ministry at age 19. After struggling to understand the purpose during college, he reluctantly or cautiously acquiesced to God’s call by the time he was a senior, which began a long 20+ year journey of preparation and training through life, work, and local church ministry until his official transition into vocational ministry at age 39, when he was ordained into pastoral ministry through SBC (Southern Baptist Convention).

Prior to founding San Francisco Bay Christian Fellowship, he has served primarily in church planting, replanting, and church revitalization mission over the last 12 years. He has served and led several local churches as a pastor and a church planter in San Francisco and the East Bay. Prior to his formal pastoral ministry tenure, he has been involved in the local church ministries and missions over the last 30+ years since 1990, as a lay leader, serving in a variety of capacities, including children, youth, college, young adults, families, and senior adults ministries. He had also served as a deacon, an elder and a member of the board of directors for a number of church plants since 2003. In addition to local pastoral, preaching, and teaching ministry, he also supports and serves in various initiatives, local/regional networks, and coalitions for church planting and international global missions. He currently serves as an adjunct professor for SUM Bible College & Seminary and an adjunct faculty for Gateway Seminary where he’s also a certified TFE (theological field education) mentor for graduate students & pastoral interns. He currently serves as a member of the Executive Board’s Convention Operations Committee with CSBC (California Southern Baptist Convention).

Prior to transitioning into ministry, he had worked in the marketplace - technology industry (semiconductor, information technology, and software) for over 15 years serving in a variety of different capacities as a manager, executive, and consultant/advisor for both the Fortune 500 companies, including Samsung, HP, Mentor Graphics, Synopsys, etc. as well as venture startup firms. Towards the later part of his professional career, he focused primarily on working with international technology startups (from Asia-Pacific region such as Taiwan, China, Korea, and India) assisting/advising CXO’s and executives. Through the late 2000s, he had served as VP & Partner for Calance, an IT management consulting firm specializing in the healthcare industry and Managing Partner for Semieda & Co., an advisory consulting firm specializing in the semiconductor/EDA industry.

He’s a proud father of two sons, Joshua, who will be starting his 3rd year in college (UC Berkeley) and Jonathan, who will be starting his freshman year in high school (Marin Catholic). He and his family reside in San Francisco, CA. During his spare time, he enjoys learning to cook different dishes, as well as tasting new cuisines from different cultures.

He’s a graduate of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (BS), Pepperdine University (MBA), and Stanford Business School (Executive Education: General Management). He has received a M.Div. and M.Miss. from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary (Mill Valley, CA), and is currently a D.Min. candidate at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Louisville, KY).
